Mary Quant’s bob was one of the iconic styles of the sixties. Short and mid-length hairstyles are big news for this summer and it’s great to see that the bob made several appearances on the SS18 catwalk shows, albeit with a contemporary twist.
The bob is timeless and whether you go for the classic curves of Mary Quant or longer lengths and the textured ends of the contemporary bob, one thing is true. The bob requires an ultra-sleek finish. We share our step-by-step guide of how to style a sleek bob.
Step-By-Step Guide: How to Style a Sleek Bob
Wash your hair with the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. This is an important step. Choose a shampoo and conditioner that are too heavy for your hair and you risk leaving a residue and weighing down the hair, leaving it looking flat. If your hair is in need of extra moisture choose a hydrating shampoo and conditioner to help achieve the sleek finish. Hydrated hair is easier to style and will hold the shape better.
After washing, towel-dry your hair leaving it damp not dripping wet. At this point, you’ll need a styling product. Choose a styling product that is going to shine the hair and give you control to help achieve the sleek finish. Our favourite product to use for this style is our Styling Mist for Natural Hold and a Glossy Finish. It gives a shiny finish and hold but it still leaves the hair with movement.
Whichever styling product you choose, we have one piece of advice, less is more. Go light on styling products to avoid residue and a stickiness. Apply your styling product and then you can roughly blow-dry with a hairdryer, to remove excess moisture.
Ok so you are now prepped and ready to go. For this step, you’ll need the classic Denman brush. Did you know that this was Vidal Sassoon’s brush of choice when he was creating that iconic look for Mary Quant? The Denman brush is perfect to style a sleek bob. It glides through the hair, smoothing as it goes. The trick here is to brush your hair in a downward motion as you blow-dry. For a sleek finish make sure you keep the brush flat to your head as you dry it. Pulling the brush away from the head at an angle will create more volume so try to avoid this.
You can then decide what you want to do with the ends. You can either curl the bob a la Mary or you can go for more texture. The beauty of the Denman brush is that you can use it like a roller or you can use it to create movement.
The final step is a small but important one. Make sure you don’t over-dry your hair. This is a common a mistake and often results in the hair becoming fly-away and static. If you find static is a problem for your hair, our best advice is to experiment by reducing the amount of time you use the hairdryer.
When you’ve finished drying the hair, don’t touch it. Leave it to cool down for a couple of minutes so that it sets into place.
